Sunset on Shishapangma from Base Camp
|
Update 11/14/2006: Reliable sources tell EverestNews.com
that a team of Chinese are on the way
to try to rescue the body, near camp II , above 7000m high. The body of
Bruno Carvalho. Several are finding this somewhat usual.... It is unclear if
the family requested the Chinese bring the body down or what is happening...
Stay Tuned.
Earlier update: The news was being let out as to late summits on
Shishapangma, but we got the news that the success might not be success
again... A climber did not make it back. STOP PRESS, STOP PRESS...
"Bruno Carvalho Died in the descent" was the
message we got, time to hold the update....
Bruno Carvalho, climbing on the team led by Everest summiter
Joao Garcia summited along with Rui Rosado and a Sherpa (unclear which summit
at this point). In a bold move the expedition led by Joao got to the mountain
late and made an attempt on Shishapangma with little support and little
reserves in case of trouble. Bruno Carvalho apparently was the last to summit
and was the last coming down, alone, as the others went ahead..... Sadly Bruno
Carvalho is dead tonight...
Joao Garcia, of course, is best known to those who have a
real knowledge of 8000 meter climbing for his 1999 Everest summit on his
commercial expedition with partner Pascal Debrouwer. Pascal died on the
descent after summiting with Joao. While other climbers in the team turned
back, Joao and Pascal keep going and reached the Summit of Everest. Pascal
wanted to slow down and spend more time at up high on the way up, but Joao
wanted to push on and set up high camp (which was not yet set up); they pushed
on.... Joao set up camp 3 and Pascal arrived a couple of hours later at around
8pm. At midnight they left for the summit of Everest without oxygen!
Joao was confused when he arrived at the summit in that he could not find the
Chinese tripod, it was not there in 1999, but he continued to look for it was
a couple of hours... Pascal still climbing, arrived at the Summit at 3.30
pm... They started down, it was getting dark and they left headlamps down
lower, Joao went ahead leaving Pascal behind again... Joao made it to
high camp but in terrible condition. Pascal did not return... Polish climbers
the next day found Pascal below the First Step but could not awake him. As the
day got warmer, Pascal awoke and starting walking down the mountain, but he
was unroped and alone... He was seen falling down the mountain by other
climbers... Pascal was a nice guy with huge plans but now he was dead...
Summiting too late and pushing too hard on Everest, a story that has been
repeated again and again...
Joao lost several digits and many believed would never climb
again... He started climbing again a few years ago and have adding several
summits to his record...
