Dispatch Seven:
Hello from basecamp. Matt Brennan reporting from 14,350.
We are set to move to the summit ridge tomorrow. We have
spent the past two days carrying loads to 17,500. This
is tedious as it requires us to carry 30-40 pds up a
3,500 ft steep scree slope. Chris and Andy have done a
tremendous amount of work. Yesterday Chris went to high
camp at 19,600 to scout out tent sites. We heard a rumor
of a secluded site that provides maximum protection from
the high winds Aconcagua is known for. Two days ago
these same winds shredded several tents causing the
occupants to scatter for shelter in the middle of the
night. Chris located the site and it looks good. Our
gameplan is to spend one night at 17,500 and move to
high camp the following day. If the weather holds, we go
for the summit on Saturday.
We have made many friends from all over the world.
This is truly an international mountain and it is
interesting in chatting with climbers from around the
world. It has been a great experience.
More later. Matt
