Update 12/14/2003: Japanese summit attempt underway...
NAGOYA — "Japanese climbers have a
high possibility of reaching the 8,516-meter peak from
the south face of Mt Lhotse in the Himalayas".. Reported
by Japan today
Noboru Onoe, expedition leader, is
back with Osamu Tanabe, 7 8000 meter summits, attempting
the south face of Lhotse again. You might recall their
expedition in 2001. His time the Japanese are reporting
they might make it... A first summit of Lhotse in Winter
via the South face.
According to
JapanToday the expedition set up high camp On
Tuesday and they believe they will likely summit in the
next 10 days...
Krzysztof Wielicki, of course summited Lhotse in winter in
1988 via the normal route, solo. Note he also summited Mount Everest
(February 17, 1980) - normal route from Nepal in winter with Leszek Cichy.
