Babu Chiri Sherpa has pass away 4/29/01: Update 5/1/01

Babu Chiri Sherpa

Update 5/1/2001 from Gabriel Filippi who attempted Everest last year with Babu.

The dead body was brought back 10 a.m. this morning to Kathmandu airport. Tons of reporters were there. One of the King's spokesperson was there too. A lot of people everywhere, in the streets, sidewalks, on the top of roofs. People everywhere. People were walking slowly, following the cortege. A car was carrying his brother Dawa and the rest of the family. TV, radio and newspapers talked about his death. This is the only thing that people talk about. It is a national tragedy.  Nepal is in a terrible shock. Friends all over the world too. Now they all are praying in the Monastery. The Prime Minister was expected during the afternoon. The cremation is scheduled for Thursday in Kathmandu. Babu and his friends are thankful to everyone who helped and will continue to help making Babu's dream a reality.

Please pass the news to others to give.

Many want to know who helped get the body out of the crevasse. The only name we have heard so far is Willie Benegas.

The news of his death is here.

More on Babu here on his page on EverestNews.com. Including Babu's Q&A were he talks about his dream.
