EverestHistory.com Everest summiter Sandy Hill Pittman

Sandy Hill Pittman, a former New York fashion editor and Contributing Editor to Allure and Conde Nast Traveler, has reached the Seven Summits including Carstensz. Pittman summited Mt. Everest on May 10, 1996, after two previous summiting attempts.  On the two previous climbs, one of them guided by David Breashears of the IMAX/IWERKS team, Pittman had turned back before reaching the summit.

On her third attempt, Pittman, 41 at the time, was part of the  1996, Mountain Madness Expedition led by Scott Fischer.  The expedition was hit by a freak storm that claimed the life of nine climbers including Fisher.

The Mountain Madness Expedition team was traveling via the Southeast Ridge when the storm rolled in making it impossible for Pittman and other climbers including Tim Madsen and Charlotte Fox, to determine the location of Camp IV.  The three climbers were rescued by Anatoli Boukreev who later died in an avalanche on the south face of Annapurna.

Sandy Hill Pittman was an employee of NBC whose job was to dispatch media files from Everest.  She had an agreement with NBC Interactive Media to do a daily feed to a World Wide Web site.

Personnel on the Mountain Madness Expedition included:  Scott Fischer, Martin Adams, Neal Beidleman, Anatoli Boukreev, Lene Gammelgaard, Dale Kruse, Tim Madsen, Sandy Hill, Klev Schoening, Pete Schoening, Charlotte Fox, Lobsang Jangbu Sherpa, Tashi Sherpa, Tenzing Sherpa, Pemba Sherpa, Nawang Dorje Sherpa, Nawang Sherpa (Logsang’s father), Nawang Sherpa (Tenzing’s uncle), Nawang Sherpa.
