Hannelore Schmatz of West
Germany, age 39, was the fourth and oldest woman to Summit Everest on October
2, 1979. Unfortunately, she died of exhaustion while descending becoming the
first woman and first German to die on Everest.
Schmatz was on an expedition via
the South East Ridge route with her husband and expedition leader, Gerhard
Schmatz. Gerhard became the oldest to summit Everest at age 50. Also on the
expedition was the Schmatz’ American colleague, Raymond Genet. Genet died at
27,552 feet while descending the summit on the same expedition that claimed

In 1984, while trying to
recover Hannelore’s body, Yogendra Bahadur Thapa and Sherpa Ang Dorje fell to
their deaths.
Hannelore was with an America
Raymond Genet, who also died after they had to bivouac at 27,552' on their way
