Schmatz was on an expedition via the South East Ridge route with her husband and expedition leader, Gerhard Schmatz.  Gerhard became the oldest to summit Everest at age 50.  Also on the expedition was the Schmatz’ American colleague, Raymond Genet.  Genet died at 27,552 feet while descending the summit on the same expedition that claimed Hannelore.

In 1984, while trying to recover Hannelore’s body, Yogendra Bahadur Thapa and Sherpa Ang Dorje fell to their deaths.

Hannelore was with an America Raymond Genet, who also died after they had to bivouac at 27,552' on their way down from the summit.
