Andy and I have been climbing mountains together since we were kids- we
started in Wales (UK) then progressed through the Lake District and onto
Scotland. 4 years ago we went on our first trip to the French Alps. We climbed
Mont Blanc to name but a few. We liked it that much we went back 3 times that
year and have been twice per year since climbing a range of peaks including
the Matterhorn in winter.
For years we have dreamed of climbing big mountains with Everest being the
main goal. We set about gaining the experience needed to take on an expedition
to Everest from the North.
In 2002 we climbed Ama Dablam as team members with Dan Mazur. This is where
we met the third member of our expedition Jon Briggs. We all got on together
and shared the summit together. We really enjoyed the experience and found Dan
to be a great guy. As soon as we got back to the UK we started planning the
expedition. We sent PowerPoint presentations and letters to a range of
companies both related and non-related to mountaineering. We had a positive
response from a number of companies ranging from builders, tent manufacturers,
and private investors, a medical group and a kitchen manufacturer. We would
like to mention the sponsors on a footnote at the bottom of the dispatches (if
that’s allowed and possible for you guys).
The expedition: As mentioned above we have been planning Everest for a
couple of years. We decided that we wanted climb from the North and wanted to
be as independent as possible. (Knowing that we would need help with obtaining
the permit and logistics from Nepal and Tibet)
Dan provided the perfect solution for us in the form of his basic service
expeditions. He has arranged our permit, transport to Chinese base camp and 1
climbing Sherpa and Tibetan porter. The rest is up to us…
Our sponsors have been really good to us. Most of our clothing is RAB our
tents Force ten, our boots Boreal, our food wayfarer and our oxygen summit
oxygen (from the UK – same system as you guys)
Although we are not doing the climb for a charity – we do support the
CHILDREN with LEUKEMIA. We have set ourselves a target for raising £50000
within 6 months. With the help of our sponsor T & F electronics we have made a
personal £5000 donation. There is a link on our website through to the charity
where people can make donations via a secure credit card page and see how much
money we have raised so far.
