Vernon Tejas was the youngest
person to have ever climbed to the top of the
seven summits (at the
time), the highest peak on each continent. He has accomplished this three
times and is currently working on his fourth. Although, these days just
reaching the summit does not seem to be enough for the grandson of “Captain
Kangaroo”. Vernon is now working his way through the Seven Plummets; this
involves hang gliding down from the summits of the highest points on each
continent. So far, Vernon has checked off Aconcagua and Elbrus.
Vernon was named one of the
top 50 Alaskan athletes by Sports Illustrated and finished in the top 10
during the 1999 Eco-Challenge. He has guided over 40 climbs on Denali, and
became a local legend after his first solo winter ascent up Denali. Vernon
also made the first solo ascent of Mt. Vinson and a winter ascent of
Aconcagua. He was the lead guide responsible for Col. Norman Vaughn’s
successful summit of Mt. Vaughn.
As a guide for Alpine Ascents
International, Vernon has guided clients up Elbrus, Kilimanjaro, and Iran’s
Mt. Damavand, among others. Vernon made history by being the youngest to climb
the seven summits and is hoping to make history again by climbing all seven
summits twice in one calendar year.
Vern first summited Everest on May 12, 1992,
then again on May 25, 2002, and again on May 30, 2003. He was also a member of
Everest expedition in 1989, 90 and 2000 expedition. He summited Everest again
in 2004
May 24th for his fourth summit
of Everest.
Vern Tejas, Willi Prittie, Dave
Morton, Jose Luis Peralvo, and Lakpa Rita Sherpa will lead the Alpine Ascent
team on Everest this Spring. They will attempt the standard South East ridge
route.
