Conquering Mt. Everest means a lot more to Sir Ranulph Fiennes than just reaching the summit.  Sir Ranulph, or Rans as he is often called, at worst is tempting fate by attempting Mt. Everest less than two years after having a major heart attack.  Other issues that Rans is up against are vertigo and his fear of heights. But, at its best, Rans’ Mt. Everest expedition comes at a point in his life that could be called a new beginning.  Rans’ first wife, Ginny Fiennes, succumbed to stomach cancer last February and Rans will marry Louise Millington, 38, in March, just a short time before he attempts Everest with a commercial expedition on March 26.

A positive that works to Rans’ advantage is his lifetime of conquering what to many would seem the impossible.  Rans is listed in the  Guinness Book of Records as the world’s greatest living explorer with accomplishments including a solo expedition o the North Pole and the first unsupported crossing of the Atlantic.  Another advantage of the climb is that he is hoping to raise up to 2 million for the British Heart Foundation.
