We had some fun today
playing amongst the seracs and crevasses of the Khumbu glacier. Dave and
Lakpa set up a great ropes course near camp while the rest of us rigged our
harnesses with safety slings. After ladder crossing practice we headed into
the lower icefall to focus on skills necessary for higher passage. For most,
passing anchors safely was new stuff. Rappeling and self extrication was
review and Kay made it look positively easy. The seminar was deemed a
success as everyone came back having learned new skills and polishing old
ones.
We spent our afternoon donating our minds to science by volunteering to take
a battery test for NASA. That kept us amused till dinner and a celebration
of Geri’s 50th birthday. Our chef, Gopal made a luscious cake top off with
some honking plumber candles. We sang, we ate and we laughed. Spirits are
high and so are the winds, so we bide our time and build red blood cells.
Join us tomorrow when we venture up into the Icefall proper.
Nameste,
Vern Tejas
