At only 24 years of age,
Jean-François Carrey will attempt to be the youngest Canadian to reach the
summit of the world. Following years of training, Carrey will be the only
Canadian on a team of five Americans who will depart for Nepal on March 19,
2006. “I have thought of climbing Everest since the age of 11 and I am looking
forward to experiencing my dream,” says Carrey, a recent graduate from the
University of Ottawa and a regular speaker at various schools across the
region. "I want to be a model of inspiration for young people. It's important
to motivate them to achieve their goals and their dreams, to show them that
it's not so difficult. To want it is enough." Carrey, who has been training
for the last six years, has already accomplished a lot for his age, having
reached many of the highest summits in the world, including Island Peak, Mount
Aconcagua and Mount McKinley. This has prepared him for his next challenge, a
grueling 8,850m climb which will take the team two and a half months to
complete. “I am grateful to everyone who has supported me in reaching my
goal,” says Carrey, who has raised most of the funds needed for the expedition
through sponsors
