This morning at 3.45am Irish
time ( 8am Nepali time), Irish journalist Grania Willis summitted the standard
route on the north side of Mount Everest, becoming the first Irishwoman to do
so. Grania confirmed her success from Camp 4 by phone this morning at 9.45am
Irish time to Tom McCormack.
"Grania was excited,
exhausted and relieved. She was out of danger and in great spirits. Grania is
now looking forward to a few glasses of Kir with her many friends and
supporters," Tom said.
Grania left Ireland on March
30th for Kathmandu. She reached Everest base camp c April 8th at 5,200m above
sea level. Her expedition then proceeded to Advanced Base Camp ( 6,400m )
where very poor weather and high winds delayed their summit attempt until this
weekend. Grania will now return to Kathmandu this week and return to victory
celebrations in Ireland June 11th.
Last September Grania became
the first Irishwoman to summit Cho Oyu, the sixth highest mountain in the
world according to the team.
