Update May 27th 2005: George and Lakpa were still at ABC
yesterday morning. They are again part of the Asian Trekking Group for
independent where all climbers are on their own. George has one Sherpa to
help. Interesting, Lakpa Brother, who has climbed with George and Lakpa the
last 2 or so years is the sirdar of the Russian team. Another one of George
old Sherpa helpers is sirdar of the British commercial team...
Update 5/17/2005: George and Lakpa are doing fine. They are
still
at ABC eating well and thinking of you. They do not go down to base camp but
instead stay at ABC for the whole expedition. George and Lakpa eat with the
Sherpas. George believes one should eat like the Sherpas do, it works for
them, and he has summited 6 times in the last 6th years, once without oxygen
(something less than 100 have done on Everest). So now you know his secret!
How good are George and Lakpa? Sadly, we might never know.
Lakpa, of course is a Sherpa. Off the mountain you would think she is just a
housewife. On the mountain, she has what it takes and more! She can turn it
on, and you know it!
George and Lakpa, has a young daughter, Sunny, so climbing
besides their annual vacation to Everest is hard. George, has some plans for
some interesting climbs, that hopefully we can tell you more about in the
future. Chuck, a professional guide went to Everest last year on the Asian
Trekking expedition that George joins every year. Chuck summited with
George on his first attempt on Everest, said this about George: "There is no
way I could keep up with him, when he did not want me too."
George has a high level of respect for Everest. He has seen
many die in the last 7 years. Their friends ask you to please keep George and
Lakpa in your thoughts and prayers in the next few weeks. Everest is a
dangerous place, even for the best...
