Update:
Pheriche
Today we awoke to sunny skies and a rest day!! Well,
not really because we hiked up to 15,500ft to continue with our
acclimatization. Some of us stayed down at the tea house, enjoying the sun
room and the local hospitality. Pheriche is a small village with many rock
walls and a small smattering of tea houses along the main route. There is a
high altitude medical clinic here in Pheriche and luckily no one has had to
take advantage of it. On the hike, we got great views of Island Peak (20,300
feet or something), and Makalu, which is the fifth highest mountain in the
world. Willie reminded us all about the use of one walking pole vs. two when
hiking. He demonstrated how to move down the mountain and then took off and we
all ran down, only to have Todd waiting for us at the bottom and scolding us
for running in such altitude!

We’ll let Willie and Todd duke
it out…There is only one hot shower and because there are 31 of us, the list
to get a hot shower is very long. Patience is necessary! The shower consists
of a metal pan of hot water from the kitchen poured into a large plastic
bucket and dribbled down over the user, in 28 degree weather.
We all had lunch together in our tea house called Himalayan Hotel owned by a
very friendly and helpful sherpani named Ang Kandi. Everybody is looking
forward to a restful afternoon and getting ready to move up to Lobuche which
is closer to Everest base camp.

Best to you all,
Jose Luis.
