Update:
Summit Night 8:30pm
IT’S A GO! We just got the call
from Lakpa at Camp 4 a little while ago that conditions have improved
considerably at the South Col. The team has been huddling in their tents all
day to stay out of the 30 to 40 knot winds, but as night fell the winds did
too. Right now we have “classic” conditions of clouds and light snow at base
camp while higher on the mountain it is clear and calm. I think three out of
our last four expeditions have summated in conditions like this. We are all
hoping they stay that way.
So right now the team of Dave Morton, Jose Luis, Lakpa, Esther, Tony, and
Danielle are getting ready to start climbing at about 9:30 this evening. This
is their last chance to get something to eat and drink before suiting up and
climbing through the night. They will be joined by climbing sherpas Mingma
Tshering, Kami Rita, Tsherri, Nima Nuru, and Tshering Dorje. Dorje and Pemba
Choti will be supporting from the South Col, and Willi Prittie is at Camp 2.
Here at base camp we will be doing another all night vigil, monitoring the
radio and burning juniper. Most of the base camp sherpas will be helping so we
can all take shifts and hopefully get a little sleep as well. I will also be
sending in cybercasts every few hours or as any news breaks.
So here we go. . . . . . Ellie
Dispatches
