3 man Singapore
Expedition without oxygen expedition (Climbers
Robert Goh, Lim Kim
Boon and Edwin Siew)
Update:
Robert (left) and Edwin, all
kitted up and ready for move up the mountain.
Robert and Edwin left this
morning at 6am on their final acclimatisation. After a long wait for good
weather and for the fixed ropes to be established up to Camp 4, they are now
able to climb up to acclimatize to 8,000m.
They will arrive at Camp 2
tonight, rest a day and ascend to Camp 3 (7,300m) the following day. There,
they will spend a night without using bottled oxygen. The next morning t about
4am, they will climb up to Camp 4 (8,000m) which is on a vast, flat area known
as the South Col. How they perform here will be the big test. They are
adhering to the theory of climbing high and sleeping low. That means, climbing
up to Camp 4 and returning to Camp 2 for the night. This will help the body to
acclimatize to the higher altitude, adjusting to the lower levels of oxygen up
there.
From Camp 2, they will return
to Base Camp to rest and recover while waiting for a god-weather summit
window. How they perform during this acclimatisation will determine how ready
they are the summit. Their bodies need to function efficiently in order to
absorb as much oxygen into their blood as possible.
