The international expedition in
which Ecuadorian climber Ivan Vallejo participates, has conquered the summit
of Nanga Parbat, the eighth highest mountain in the world (8,125 m) located in
the Karakorum mountain system, in Pakistan. Ivan Vallejo's expedition was
organized by Televisión Española with the objective of filming the ascent for
the "Al Filo de lo Imposible" TV show. It is also formed by the Basque
climbers Edurne Pasaban (chief of the expedition), who with this summits
becomes the living woman with most eight-thousands in the world (eight), her
fellow Spaniards Ester Sabadell, Marianne Chapuisat, José Bereziartu, the
Italian Silvio Mondinelli and the Pakistani porter Hassan Jan.
Via satellite telephone,
Vallejo confirmed his success on the assault of the summit, being part of the
first group of climbers (Pasaban, Mondinelli, Hassan) with whom Ignacio Orbiz
joined later. They left Camp IV located at 7,250 m at 1h10 in the morning and
reached the summit at 8h45 of Tuesday, July 20. The second group of "Al Filo"
got there at 10h00.
A very difficult mountain,
with steep slopes and vertical walls, where they hardly walked because they
had to climb the entire route to get to each high altitude camp and finally
the summit, always with intense cold. The climbers decided to recover from
the hard effort in Camp IV and go down to base camp on Wednesday 22, after a
day of hydration and rest. The Ecuadorian climber achieves this way his
eleventh summit for the project Desafío 14 (Challenge 14), which looks to
reach the summit of the 14 highest mountains of the world without the help of
supplemental oxygen.
