The Khumbu Crampon designed by
Montrail is part of their “Integrated Climbing Equipment” series. The I.C.E.
series includes a patented combination consisting of gaiters, crampons and
boots. The Khumbu crampon is designed specifically for Montrail’s I.C.E. 9 boots
and will only fit the Lotus GTX, Olympus and I.C.E. 9. Unlike other crampons,
the Khumbu has utilized technology allowing the rails to nest inside of the
boots outsole lug pattern. This variance increases contact between the outsole
and crampon, which improves the feel and gives a more precise fit, minimizes
snow-balling. The Khumbu is similar to the
I.C.E. 9 crampon in many ways. They have both been cut from the highest quality
4130 Chromoly steel. However, the Khumbu is lighter weight (1lb. 5oz.) and
better suited for general mountaineering due to its formed horizontal front
points. By being cut boot specific the best possible fit and optimal placement
points are achieved, these details along with the midfoot coupler make the
Khumbu an excellent crampon on snow, steep névé and alpine, waterfall ice. In
addition, the rocker design makes these crampons equally well suited for walking
over flat or inclined ground.
There are many advantages to
the custom fit provided within the I.C.E. series. Having the toe bail secured to
the boot outsole without additional straps or clips, minimized exposure to rock
and opposing crampon points and the vertically oriented rails create absolute
rigidity and strength.
