 Montrail, I.C.E.
9 Crampon Review
By the Everest GearGal
|
 |
 |
The I.C.E. 9 Crampon designed
by Montrail is part of their “Integrated Climbing Equipment” series. The I.C.E.
series includes a patented combination consisting of gaiters, crampons and
boots. The I.C.E. 9 crampon is designed specifically for Montrail’s I.C.E. 9
boot and will only fit the Lotus GTX, Olympus and I.C.E. 9. Unlike other
crampons, the I.C.E. 9 has utilized technology allowing the rails to nest inside
of the boots outsole lug pattern. This variance increases contact between the
outsole and crampon, which improves the feel and gives a more precise fit,
minimizes snow-balling. The I.C.E. 9 crampon is most
functional on technical ice and mixed climbing routes. These crampons can be a
real calf- saver while climbing because the adjustable front points are aligned
with the secondary points; this reduces the leveraging while front-pointing.
Another advantage is an easy transition from dual to mono-point. The I.C.E. 9
has been cut from the highest quality 4130 Chromoly steel and achieves the best
possible fit and optimal placement points by being cut boot specific.
There are many advantages to
the custom fit provided within the I.C.E. series. Having the toe bail secured
onto the boot outsole, minimizing exposure to rock and opposing crampon points
and the vertically oriented rails create absolute rigidity and strength. These
crampons have serrated, double secondary points that act as anchors during off
angle pitches and the inward angle points will enhance breaking during heady
descents and cauliflower ice.
