Petzl Myo 5 Headlamp Review By the Everest GearGal

The Petzl Myo 5 headlight combines the best features found in hands free lighting. Manufactured with a high intensity Xenon bulb on top of 5 white LED bulbs, all in a compact and water resistant package. The engineers at Petzl designed this headlight to meet the demands of those seeking long-range lighting and extended battery life.

The Myo 5 has three lighting levels; an optimum level which is ideal for night hiking, a maximum level for climbing or moving quickly on technical terrain and an economy level for reading and setting up camp. One navigates from one setting to the next by turning the rotating bezel switch. In order to conserve battery life it is best to use the Xenon bulb only when necessary, using the LED bulbs as your primary light source.

Having the Xenon bulb feature is a needed addition to what has become an almost essential piece of equipment, the LED headlight. The Xenon beam is adjustable and adds the luxury of long distance vision.

The Myo 5 headlight weighs in at just 138g, not including the batteries. It operates on 4 AA alkaline batteries (included) and when the batteries get low the system switches to a reserve power mode, maximizing the remaining burn time and letting you know it is time to change the batteries.

This headlight is ideal for backpackers, adventure racers, climbers and mountaineers. However, those who enjoy cold weather adventures should note that some feedback has shown the rotating bezel switch can be challenging to operate when wearing gloves.

A reader added 2 excellent points: You might mention that the rotating gear bezel is MUCH EASIER to operate when wearing gloves/mitts than the teensy little buttons on most lights. You might also add the weight savings and superior cold weather performance of LITHIUM AA BATTERIES
