The last surviving member from Mallory and Irvine's 1924 ill-fated expedition to climb Mt Everest, Ang Tshering, has passed away at his home on May 22nd in Darjeeling. He suffered a stroke 3 weeks ago and never regained consciousness. He was cremated yesterday - May 24th. Born in Solu Khumbu, Ang's first climbing job was as a high-altitude porter for the 1924 British expedition when he was only twenty years old. He carried loads to the higher camps, but it seems unlikely that he went as far as Camp 6 since his name doesn't appear on a note found on Mallory's body that lists the names of four other Sherpas. On the morning of Mallory and Irvine's summit attempt, Ang waited at a camp below the North Col and nervously watched as the clouds rolled in and obscured the mountain from view. When they never returned, Ang was convinced that the weather prevented Mallory and Irvine from reaching the top.

Ang had a long and distinguished climbing career, actively participating in major Himalayan expeditions until the age of 69 when his last job was as a guide on an Indian expedition. In 1934 he was a member of the disastrous German attempt on Nanga Parbat, a trip that ended with the deaths of three German climbers and six Sherpas in terrible weather conditions. Ang himself went nine days without food, and was finally able to struggle down the mountain to get help. After surviving the expedition, Ang Tshering was hospitalized for several months while recovering from his injuries and frostbite. For his heroic efforts, he was awarded the German Red Cross medal, personally signed by Adolf Hitler.
