Despite having been a member of
the US Ski Team and a remarkable athlete, Klev Schoening was a relatively
inexperienced climber when he set out to climb Everest in 1996. Klev was
climbing with his 68 year old Uncle Pete Schoening (a very experienced
mountaineer), under the leadership of Scott Fisher and Mountain Madness.
Klev was successful in reaching
the summit of Everest on his very first Himalayan expedition. He also
helped his teammates throughout the legendary storm and tragedy that occurred
May 10, 1996 on Everest. In fact, before the storm hit the mountain, Klev had
found himself playing the role of high-altitude doctor for Nawang Sherpa, who
was suffering from advanced pulmonary edema. Klev organized a rescue and carried
Nawang from Camp II down to Camp I. At Camp I he was met by a rescue team.
After reaching the summit of
Everest and losing their bearings in the storm during the descent, Klev
eventually was able to guide himself, along with Gammerlgaad and Neal back to
camp. Once in camp he was able to help describe the location of other climbers
in need of assistance.
Both Klev and his Uncle Pete
made it back down to base camp safely. Prior to climbing Everest, the highest
peak Klev had climbed was Aconcagua.
