Spring 2000: 5 Summits, one dies on the way down.
Bernd Mahnert, a German
climber, died while descending from the Summit at 7400 meters. Götz
Wiegand, Bernd Mehnert, Olaf Zill, Thomas Turpe, and Frank Meutzner had reached
the Summit on 15th May at 3 p.m. according to the Min. of Tourism.
Update:
My name is Elisabeth Eulerich and I was the expedition doctor. Bernd
Mehnert's cause of death was most likely a pulmonary embolism which killed him
within seconds. By the time they built down the tents in C4 he was fine, then
got up, did only 3 steps and fell. He was dead by the time the next team member
reached him and could not be rescusitated. With much regards, Dr Elisabeth
