Update 6/23/2006: Dear EverestNews.com, Bulgarian Nikolay
Petkov and Doychin Boyanov reached camp 2 (6100 m) in June 22 and descended to
BC today, June 23.
Nikolay and Doychin will be climbing completely
self-supported, without supplemental oxygen, without guides, and without
high-altitude porters. Weather is sunny and to hot. Best, Peter
Update 6/19/2006: Bulgarian Nanga Parbat Expedition reach
the base camp and we received a call from them every things is going well..
Background:
Nikolay Petkov and Doychin Boyanov - two of the best Bulgarian climbers - are back to the Karakorum.
Together, they are ready to summit Nanga Parbat (8125 m) and Gasherbrum- 1 (or
Hidden peak, 8068 m) this summer. Although details are still sketchy, the pair
hopes to summit both peaks in light style and Hidden peak – by new route from
Southwest.
Nikolay Petkov, 48 years old, has climbed Everest twice (1984 - Integral West
Ridge, 2004 - Chinese route from North) and Dhaulagiri (8167 m) in 1997. He
was a leader of the Bulgarian National expedition on Broad peak (8047 m) in
2001. Doychin Boyanov (30) was a member of this expedition. He ascended
Everest without supplementary O2 (2004). In 2005, as a member of the
“Polish-Bulgarian Team K-2 Expedition”, reached 8150 m on K-2.
The guys don't seem to care
that no one was able to reach the top of Gasherbrum-1 last year, or if Nanga
Parbat is considered the most dangerous of all 8000ers. Their only interest is
to summit both peaks.
