K2 2006: Nives Meroi and Romano Benet have summited K2!

Copyright© Billy Pierson: Murph goes to K2: The best K2 video on the planet:  DVD

Legendary climb for ives Meroi and Romano Benet on K2. The climbing couple, reached yesterday morning the summit of K2, aka "the mountain of Italians", climbed for the first time in 1954 by Lino Lacedelli e Achille Compagnoni.

With extraordinary commitment - Nives and Romano were the only climbers on the Abruzzi Spur in the last tow days ! - they left camp 4 ( at about 7.700 m. ) at 2 AM summiting Chogorì eleven hours later. By the last news - thanks to telephone contact got with their companions Roberto Alloi e Mario Cedolin, at BC - we know the weather has been just perfect, as well as the route conditions, with hard snow and ice, that means more technical climb but not so exhausting as for the proceeding. The latest news report them to be already in camp 4 and resting; they are expected to be back in BC this evening.

It's a climb of absolute value, especially considered the approach "by fair means" that Nives and Romano had with K2, climbed, as usual, with no supplementary oxygen, high altitude porters and alpine-style - this last also due to the gale that blew away high camps during the last week. The climbers will return to Italy around 7th-8th august. Manuel Lugli
