The 16th National Ski
Championship at Nalta valley - Gilgit Northern Area - Pakistan
The 16th
National Ski Championship Trophy held at Naltar from February 23 – 27, 2008.
Northern Areas Scouts was winner of the National Ski Championship Trophy,
defeating the defending champion Pakistan Air Force. PAF team stood second and
army team were third. Women Ski Championship was held on February 15th.
Sixty skiers
from all over the country competed for two different categories, Slalom and
Giant Slalom events. All 12 ski associations Sindh, NWFP, Punjab, Balochistan,
Islamabad, Alpine Club, Civil Aviation Authority, Northern Areas Ski
Federation, Northern Areas Scouts, Adventure Foundation, Army, and PAF
participated in the championship.










Naltar valley
Hidden in the mountains up a
dramatic barren gorge 19 Kilometers is the green and lush valley. Rainfall
here is about 410 millimeters per year i.e more than three times that of
Gilgit and the valley heavily wooded with pine, spruces, rowan and juniper,
the valley is most highly recommended for day outing from Gilgit. Naltar
village at 2,880 meters has a Pakistan Air force Ski training base and good
walk about for energetic tourist.
Naltar is a two hours drive
and 47 Kilometer from Gilgit via the west back of the Hunza River to Nomal
village and from there northwest up to the Naltar Nallah to the green meadows
of Naltar. There is snow at Naltar till end of March.
