 GI and GII 2009: Bulgarian GI and GII Expedition Summit attempt soon | |||||||

July 18, 2009: Bulgarians Nikolay Petkov, Doychin Boyanov, Boyan Petrov and Nikolay Valkov are in the Camp 3 (7100m ) at Gasherbrum I. Petkov, Boyanov, Petrov and Valkov will walk to summit tomorrow (Sunday, July 19) if the weather conditions will be stabled. Peter Atanasov Earlier: This summer Bulgarian climbers Nikolay Petkov, Doychin Boyanov, Boyan Petrov and Nikolay Valkov will attempt to ascent Gasherbrum I (8068m) and Gasherbrum II (8035m) in Pakistan. The team is in the base camp. Foursome will walk to camp 2 (6500m) in Monday if the weather conditions will be stabled. The team on GI and GII: Nikolay Petkov (51 years), leader, Mount Everest (via West Ridge in 1984, by Chinese route from North in 2004), Dhaulagiri, Nanga Parbat. Doychin Boyanov: Mount Everest (without oxygen, 2004), Nanga Parbat. Boyan Petrov: Knan Tengri (6995m) in Tien-Shan, peak Lenin (7134m) in Pamir, Aconcagua, McKinley, Kilimanjaro. Nikolay Valkov had climbed Tetnuld (4974m) and Kazbek (5047m) in Caucasus. Peter PetrovHistory of the Hidden Peak1889-1929: The Gasherbrum-group is surveyed and photographed by Britains and Italians. The British explorer M. Conway introduced the names 'Hidden Peak' and Gasherbrum II. 1934: A big international expedition, organized by the Swiss G.O. Dyhrenfurth, explores both peaks. Two climbers get to a height of 6300 meters. 1936: A French expedition gets to 6900 meters. 1958: An American expedition, headed by Clinch and Schoening, climbs the summit for the very first time. On the way crossing the south spur, they use short ski and snow shoes. Pete Schoening and Andrew Kauffman get the summit on July 4th 1958. As a 2-man-expedition with only twelve sherpas to the base camp, R. Messner and P. Habeler get to the summit on a new route (northwest route)(2nd. ascent). One day later, they are followed by three Austrians on the same route (3rd. ascent).
