On behalf of the International Federation
of Climbing and Mountaineering I would like to let you
know about new UIAA Environmental Label.
What is it?
Environmental Label has been introduced to promote high standards of conduct
and responsible access for climbing and mountain activities. Any provider of
organized mountain activities such as a training center, trekking or
expedition organization, qualified instructor or a guide who is prepared to
support and act according to the UIAA’s Environmental Objectives and
Guidelines can apply for the label.
Why do we need
one of the world’s most important environments and tourist destinations. The
beautiful peaks and landscapes are becoming increasingly attractive as a place
of escape in a stressful world. Experience has shown that mountain tourism has
a huge potential to help development, but care needs to be taken to avoid
damaging impacts. By following good practice it is possible to protect the
fragile mountain ecosystems and the qualities that make these environments so
alluring. Mountains are among the worlds most important repositories of
biodiversity, yet construction, pollution and noise all threaten the precious
asset. In order to protect mountains UIAA decided to establish the UIAA
Environmental Label with the set of Environmental Objectives and Guidelines.
We hope that all outdoor providers care about the future of mountains and they
will help UIAA in the promotion of its specialist work to protect access for
responsible mountain activities.
What are the
label holders can use the UIAA Environment logo to demonstrate their
commitment to internationally agreed good practice. To inform the outdoor
community and the UIAA’s 92 member associations in 68 countries the
Environment label and label holders will be promoted in the UIAA journal and
on a new dedicated and exclusive section of the UIAA website. Label holders
will also have priority for other UIAA promotions, and can submit examples of
environmental good practice to be highlighted on the website.
How to apply?
the environment Label can be made on-line at
www.uiaa.ch. Once the application has been accepted the label holder will
be sent the UIAA Environment label logo and guidelines for use in their own
promotional publications, adverts and stationary.
