The trekking
route to the Kangchenjunga region in Nepal became a more
dangerous place yesterday as Maoist rebels robbed
British trekkers of Rs 28,000 ($388). The group was on
its way to Yamphudin from Suketar
when they were robbed and ordered out of the area. The
rebels also dismantled a tent.
The Maoist insurgency in Nepal began in
1996 but until this point the rebels have not often (see
4/17/2002:
Armed Maoists demand money from the Makalu
teams!) preyed upon foreign tourists , that may
be changing. In the Gopetar area in Panchtar rebels robbed Dutch and German
expeditions of Rs 12,000 ($166) and a pair of binoculars. Another group of
unknown nationality was robbed of Rs 48,000 ($665) in cash in the Yamphudin
VDC (district). The incidents occurred within two days walking distance of the
district headquarters, Fungling.
8.586-meter Mt. Kangchenjunga is the
third highest summit in the world and attracts a large number of tourists to
its slopes via the Yamphudin route. It has been an increasingly popular
destination since the government declared the region "Gift to the Earth" six
years ago.
