Mt Everest Legend dies in Climbing Accident

Arne Naess, born August 12, 1937, who summited Everest on April 29, 1985 via the standard South East Ridge route, died this morning while climbing on a farm in South Africa. Arne Naess was 66. The business man from Norway died this morning in a climbing accident 80 km north of Cape Town.

He was the leader of the First Norwegian expedition in 1985. He is known for many things, one of them is that he was the Expedition leader that got Chris Bonington to the top of Everest. Chris Bonington, at the age of 50, summited as a member of Arne's  Norwegian Everest Expedition. The expedition placed 17 climbers and Sherpas on the summit over a period of 10 days, a record at the time.

Arne Naess, was a millionaire ship owner, and Bonington acted as his "chief of staff ". On a can you top this? After Arne returned, he was on the cover of a magazine, reading a company's financial report. So? He's doing it while standing atop Everest.

In his words, climbing should be "simple in means, rich in ends and mature in its understanding of the needs of the human soul."

He was also the former husband of America Singer Diana Ross.
