For Tulsa Oklahoma native Gary Neptune
stepping onto the peak of the world’s tallest mountain
on May 14, 1983 was the culmination of a life-long
fascination with mountaineering that began with a chance
reading of "Our Everest Adventure" by Sir John Hunt.
This book made a big impression on Gary, and that
impression would stay with him all through school, and
his evacuation from The Suez in 1956, and on into his
boarding school in Switzerland, a country famous for
both its skiing and its mountains.
In 1964 Gary
was awarded a scholarship to the famous Outward Bound School in Colorado where
he was a student of climbing legend Paul Petzoldt. After leaving Outward Bound
Gary returned to Switzerland where he climbed Matterhorn and Mont Blanc.
During the late 60s Gary spent time as a geologist in Antarctica before
returning to graduate school. It was a return that led to a major decision for
Gary, to remain in academia or to devote his life to the mountains that so
fascinated him. In the end the mountains won.
