Another Helicopter has crashed at Everest base camp. Earlier
reports indicate no one was killed. reports from base camp indicate that the
helicopter was carrying reporters coming up to interview the Rotary Centennial
Everest Expedition.. More soon

Update 5/2/2005: Rotarians at Camp 2
Three adventurous Rotarians of the 'Rotary Centennial Everest Expedition
-2005' reached 'Camp No. 2' on April 27. They are planning to go to Camp No. 3
and 4. Then, they will proceed for the Summit exercise. The Rotarians, who
went to Base Camp, met the climbers Mone Mulepati, Kami Sherpa and Prem Dorjee
Sherpa and enquired about them. The medical team led by Dr. Madan Piya has
also returned. After Lukla Health Camp, they conducted camps in Phakding on
19th and Khumjung on 22nd where 404 and 401 health examinations with free
distribution of the medicines were made.
Background:
Members of the Rotary
Centennial Everest Expedition 2005 left for Lukla to climb Mt. Everest this
spring. They are planning to hoist the flag of Rotary International on top of
the world’s highest peak.
Minister for Culture, Tourism
and Civil Aviation, Mr. Buddhiraj Bajracharya and Honourable Minister for
Finance, Madhukar Shumshere Rana wished the members expedition team-- Kami
Sherpa, Pem Dorjee Sherpa and Moni Mulepati—a grand success in its mission.
The event, which is being
organised to mark Rotary Centennial Year, is promoted by Nepalese Tourism
Board.
Rotary Clubs of Nepal bade a
farewell to the members of the expedition and organized a press conference
regarding the team on March 27 in Kathmandu.
Similarly, Mr. Shanker Prasad
Pandey, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Mr.
Tek Bahadur Dangi, CEO of Nepal Tourism Board and Mr. Ang Tshering Sherpa,
President of Nepal Mountaineering Association also extended best wishes to all
of them lauding the role played by Rotary Club.
The members of expedition are
expected to reach on the top of the Everest between May 10 to 15, 2005. The
Rotary Clubs are also carrying out medical camps in the three different places
in the Khumbu region to celebrate the Rotary Centennial Year in April, 2005.
They are also going to host the Rotary Fellowship meeting at Tengboche in the
Khumbu region on April 13, 2005.
