 18 climbers feared dead in Western Nepal avalanche Update | |||||||

| A rescue team from Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) is around the base camp of Mt. Kang Guru since 22nd October in search of the missing 7 member French Expedition Team and other 11 Nepalese included in the team, swept away by an avalanche on 20th October 2005. The team rescued 4 Nepalese porters on 23rd of October, 3 of them brought to Kathmandu and 1 included in the same team for further rescue operations. One more team of 12 persons including 1 French flew today to the base camp headed by President of HRA Mr. Bikram Neupane. The rescue operation is being taken vigorously by the team of altogether 20 persons. So far, the situation of the missing persons is not known yet. Earlier Update: Reuters is reporting "rescue workers are searching for seven French and 11 Nepali climbers who went missing four days ago after an avalanche in western Nepal, rescue officials said on Sunday." Other sources are telling EverestNews.com it is unclear at this point what has happened, but that the climbers are out of contact. A rescue helicopter did find 4 Nepali porters. One porter was left behind to help find the others and 3 were bought back to Pokhara. Rescue operations are underway... The French expedition had planned to climb 6,120 meter Mt. Kanguru. According to Reuters the "avalanche tore through the base camp of the 6,981-meter (22,903-feet) Kang Guru peak."
