Renata Chlumska, the first
Swedish woman to climb Mount Everest, has just begun her adventure of
traveling 11,200 miles around the edges of the country in what she calls the
“Around America Adventure.” The journey began on July 4, 2005, when Chlumska,
accompanied by a kayak afloat with friends and family, launched her kayak at
Lake Union.
Chlumska, who was born in
Sweden December 9, 1973, has done sports for most of her life including
climbing, kayaking, diving, and bicycling and now her Around America Adventure
will put many of her adventure skills to the test. Hauling more than 180
pounds of gear and traveling alone, Chlumska plans on using her kayak, boat,
and inline skates as her modes of travel reasoning that every kilometer and/or
mile should be achieved using solely her own strength.
Chlumska’s expedition of
circumnavigating the lower 48 states had originally been planned along with
her fiancé Göran Kropp who she met when he was her teacher in a basic rock
climbing class, but Kropp died in a fall off Sunshine Wall near Vantage in
September 2002. Kropp’s death is still very fresh in the mind of Chlumska and
she is dedicating her Around America Adventure in his memory.
Chlumska’s 18-month-long
journey, which might be the first such excursion of its kind, will require her
to take along a variety of items including: water, food, a tent, sleeping
bag, several cameras, a laptop for posting on her Web site, a cell phone,
satellite phone, and a solar panel to charge them. She will also take along a
trailer for the kayak, inline skates and poles and a harness.
The daily schedule will
likely include four to six-hours of paddling working up to eight to 10-hours
of paddling each day. Chlumska is expecting that paddling down the Pacific
will be the biggest challenge of the trip because of the cold water, currents,
tides and storms. Renata Chlumska is a professional adventurer, motivational
speaker and international guide.
