Although we are fellow
residents of Almonte, we did not get to know Sean until November of 2004. My
wife Vera had called the University of Ottawa about training to deal with the
trek into Base Camp. The secretary told her that we should contact "the old
guy" that spent his lunch time running up the stairs in their 20 story
building to get in shape for Everest. This resulted in a number of
conversation with Sean in which he provided lots of useful information and
advice on what to expect on the trek and the training we should be focusing
on. At his going away party, Sean graciously invited us to sleep over (treks
normally spend a few hours in Base Camp). Unfortunately, as we got to Base
Camp Vera was suffering from symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (difficulty
getting her breath during exertion) so we had to descend ASAP. We got to Base
Camp on April 17 just after 4PM and I had a mug of tea with Sean and Harold.
The photo shows Sean and I outside his tent with other tents and prayer flags,
and the Khumbu Icefall, in the background. Jim Harvey
Do Not Stand at My Grave and
Weep
Do not stand at my grave and
weep,
I am not there... I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow...
I am the diamond glints on snow...
I am the sunlight on ripened grain...
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you waken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of gentle birds in circling flight...
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry—
I am not there... I did not die...
