Darol
Kubacz and I along with 18 other members of the Uhuru Ascent team will make an
attempt at history on Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. If successful, Darol will
become the first paraplegic in history to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro completely
unassisted. Darol is a remarkable athlete with an incredible mission in his
life. The climb will begin on Aug. 10th and if all goes
well, a summit will be made on August 17th or 18th. We believe the many
thoughts and prayers sent our way from family and friends will help us
accomplish this goal. As the expedition leader of this team, we appreciate
all of your support!
The above
is a photo of how we will convert Darol’s mountain bike (a.k.a. “The Climber”)
into some sort of lunar looking vehicle. The engineering on his bike is truly
amazing and will be critical in the last 3,500 feet of vertical climbing
through the loose boulder fields. Darol will ascend climbing ropes which feed
through a wench, mounted to the frame of the bike and powered solely by his
massive arms and torso!
Our
expedition will be filmed by two cinematographers from Newfoundland and
eventually turned into a documentary to be shared with the world.
Enjoy the
rest of your summer.
