Nepal 2006: Four Polish Trekkers Missing / not Missing

©EverestNews.com

The first press release said 2 polish trekkers were abducted by the Maoist, now they are saying 4. The Maoists deny they abducted the trekkers, while it is very clear the Maoists abduct Nepalese all the time and Sherpas sometimes.

The 4 trekkers are reported as Marzena Staniszewska, Wojcich Mysiara, Konrad Kakolewjki and Maria Los from Poland, The trekkers were on their way to Lukla, a popular destination in the Everest region.

The Maoists on a routine basis levied a "tax" on trekkers. In 2002, for the first time publicly the Maoists demanded money from climbers on a 8000 meter peak. See the report: Update 4/17/2002: Makalu 2002 Second Progress Report from American RD Caughron: Armed Maoists demand money from the Makalu teams

Last year the Maoists attacked climbers on the way to Chinese base camp: Mt. Everest 2005: Two Everest climbers attacked by Maoists bombing on the way to Everest Base camp.... More from Alexander Abramov who was in the vehicle

The trekking business in Nepal is way down, however the climbers return to Everest every year in greater numbers. Many of the names and faces are the same...

Update: reports from Nepal now state the trekkers have called in and stated the Maoists did not abduct them, but had "arguments" with them....
