

The annual general meeting of
Alpine Club of Pakistan was held on Oct 26, 2007 at media center Pakistan
Sports Complex Islamabad and was followed by the re-elections of Office
bearers and the Executive Council of the club for another term of 3 years.
The Secretary, ACP presented
the activities report and the audited accounts for the fiscal year 2006-07.
The proposed next years budget was also discussed at length and it was
unanimously approved by the large gathering of its regular and associate
members.
Mr. Nazir Sabir in his
capacity as existing president of the club thanked all the members and the
executive Council for their full support and cooperation during his tenure as
the President ACP. In his deliberations he emphasized the need to bring the
performance of this club at par with other international climbing clubs. Mr.
Nazir Sabir who enjoys honorary membership of The Alpine Club (UK), Polish
Mountaineering Federation, Japanese Alpine Club, The Himalayan Club and number
of other Alpine clubs world over said it is his long dream to run the affairs
and programmes of the ACP in line with world level organizations.
He was not satisfied with the
present financial assistance provided for this healthy activity yet according
to him Alpine Club was able to achieve bare minimum targets within limited
financial resources. He assured the audience to continue his support for
mountaineering sport and to protect mountain wealth and enhance the club’s
role by promoting country’s rich natural heritage.
He further elaborated his aim
of achieving the role of the Alpine Club to meet the needs of the youth of
Pakistan by encouraging them to get involved into the outdoors and nature
related activities in the wilderness. He asked the people and youth in
particular to take advantage of the great natural beauty of Pakistan while
talking about importance of closer contact with nature by all human beings as
it being a major source of calm of soul and within. He assured the
gathering to continue efforts to provide opportunities and to arrange the
awareness programmes in mountain training for youth and exclusively for women
by foreign women climbers with the support of international sister
organizations in this field. Under the directives of Prime Minister of
Pakistan more such programmes have been scheduled during the next year to
promote adventure tourism activities among our majority population.
Brig Amir Gulistan Janjua,
the former President of Alpine Club of Pakistan who witnessed the proceedings
at the AGM headed and the elections process. In his speech he lauded the
achievements and efforts of the present Executive body of the club. He further
said the club needs to publicize aggressively its programmes and activities
through press and electronic media to attract more youth to join in club’s
membership from different walks of life. Brig (Retd) Janjua distributed
commemorative shields to two Pakistani climbers Hassan Asad and Nisar Hussain
for their outstanding performance in the field of mountaineering this year.
Hassan Asad became the second Pakistani to have summitted all five 8000m peaks
in Pakistan who was present to receive ACP award. More shields were also
presented to number of educational institutions and individuals for their
contribution in organizing number of club events particularly women training
programmes this year.
After AGM proceedings, the
elections of new executive council of the club for the tenure 2007-2010 were
held under the supervision of an appointed election commissioner. The
elections were held in free and fair atmosphere and large number of honorary
and full member’s caste their votes. Mr. Nazir Sabir the distinguished
mountaineer and sitting president ACP was re-elected President of Alpine Club
of Pakistan for another term of three years. This was the first time that the
office of the president was contested by another candidate as against a
tradition of nomination by the sitting Executive Council. The other elected
