 Report
from Ang Tshering Sherpa on Dawa Steven Sherpa
|
 |
 |

Dear Friends, Namaste and greetings from Nepal. It has been some time since I
last wrote to you. I hope you are well. I wish to start with the most recent
news first:
You will be very pleased to know that my son, Dawa Steven Sherpa, has been
awarded:
1. Dawa Steven was in Calgary, Canada on 23 October 2008 to receive the
Special Achievement Award from the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation, Canada for
his double summit of both Mt. Everest (Eco Everest Expedition 2008) and Mt.
Lhotse (8516m), as well as for his Environmental initiatives. Asian Trekking
has contributed a Free Everest Base Camp Trek for 2 persons for auction to
raise funds for the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation Projects.
Dawa Steven has also been invited to present his video report of the Eco
Everest Expedition 2008 at the Banff Mountain Film & Book Festivals.
2. The UIAA has awarded him the Award for Contributions to UIAA for efforts to
promote conservation ethics in the mountains and to draw international
attention to the high risk in the Khumbu due to climate change. I am very
pleased by the recognition and offer my thanks to the UIAA. This award
encourages youth of the world to work for a better environment, and also
encourages further steps to protect mountain environment.
3. Dawa Steven was also selected as one of the Top Five Young
Conservationists in the World by the IUCN (International Union for
Conservation of Nature) World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) and the
International Rangers Federation (IRF).
As President of the UAAA I attended the UIAA General Assembly in Teheran from
16 to 19 October. During the same time I chaired the General Assembly meeting
of the UAAA also held in Teheran. Extensive discussions were held
specifically on regional cooperation mountains, mountain environment, climate
change and the high risks of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
It was also proposed to organize a UAAA Joint Expedition to Langsisa-Ri 6427m)
in Spring 2009. The peak is in the Jugal Himal range in the Langtang region
of Nepal. Participation will be invited from UAAA member countries.
An International Symposium on Global Warming and its impact on Climate Change
will also be organized by UAAA to be held in Kathmandu in November of 2009.
My son Dawa Steven and I have been invited to the Alpinismus Film Festival in
Prague starting on 20 November. Dawa Steven will be presenting his video
report on the Eco Everest Expedition 2008.
In the meantime - please do keep in touch and let us know if there is any way
in which can be of assistance.
Sincerely,
Ang Tshering Sherpa
